Your Creative Process

Exploring and Integrating Your Experience in New Ways

Our lives change radically at many crossroads. As we mature there is the possibility of finding a new relationship with ourselves.

Living is a creative process, though not always one we have the chance to reflect upon. Therapy is a relational space where you can change your experience by exploring it in new ways. If you've ever had the sudden feeling that there is another way of looking at a problem or something happens in your life that reorients you entirely, you know the possibilities of bringing attention to your life in new ways. We go along living by a set of assumptions and behaviors that seem to be who we are and then life challenges us in ways that we can't make sense of without growing. A therapist can go with you during times when something is trying and sometimes trying not to come into awareness. If you have already been in therapy, you know that it can offer a relationship that supports a deepening awareness and growth of self.

Unexpected and expected times in life create crisis and also crossroads. These include

relationships

losses

changes

trauma

aging

professional life

As a therapist I listen and go with you into your new awarenesses. We have the option of using dreamwork, your creative process and imaginal forms such as art, sand tray and poetry to facilitate our exploration together.

My Orientation and Background

My early training and therapeutic work was in Psychodrama. This is a method of understanding the self by bringing the inner world outside, onto a stage where the parts can be played with and new roles created. This very concrete method of enacting inner life still influences my individual work with clients. Our inner worlds change our whole lives, but early templates of who we are and who others are first structured our experience and wove the world as we experience it. Therapy lets us stretch, soften, add to and re-weave the strands of our experience. Difficult as it is to change, whether by enacting stories, talking about them, re-experiencing them, or simply paying attention to them in a safe relationship, we do begin to have more choices.

I have continued to work with symbolic expression like psychodrama, sand play,  dreamwork, poetry and other creative forms because sometimes symbolic expression is the first way we have of knowing what is going on with us. I draw upon Jungian methods like sand play and dreamwork that can allow us to witness what can emerge by way of the unconscious and the imagination.

Listening to yourself sometimes begins with someone really listening with you. Not everyone had this growing up. A therapeutic relationship is one of the few places in adult life that you can find listening and new inner resources.
